Recently, the Route 66 Sprint Series Presented by MG Tires and Franklin Motorsports held its fourth weekend of competition at the Autobahn Country Club in Joliet, IL. The turnout was excellent, with many United States Pro Kart Series competitors taking advantage of the rare opportunity for a pre event test weekend at the private venue. The approximately .7 mile kart track, is a combination of a small permanent track and a temp circuit setup on the freshly constructed skid pad adjacent to it. There were 150 entries each race day, so the rubber started to go down on the fresh skid pad asphalt by mid day on Saturday. The race-ability of the track layout received a unanimous “thumbs up” from the racers, with both a high speed front stretch that saw some karts running 70mph, down to some tight hairpin sections. Overall, the custom designed track was fast and flowing and provided excellent racing with many passing opportunities. USPKS will be running this same track layout when they make their first visit September 22-24.
The weekend weather could not have been more perfect. Temps in the low 80s with breezes kept everyone comfortable and clear skies prevailed. The Saturday morning driver’s meeting concluded with the distribution of door prizes provided by the Series and our sponsors. A Napoleon grill, several Pelican coolers, several sets of MG tires, and PKT Axles Certificates were some of the prizes handed out to appreciative racers.
There was great racing throughout the weekend, and once again, the PA audio was broadcast live via the Series website at www.www.route66kartracing.com/live. You could also listen via the Mixlr app on mobile devices by following the Route66KartRacing channel. The recorded play-by-play audio of the weekend can be found at http://mixlr.com/route66kartracing/showreel. Full results from timing and scoring can be found by visiting the Series website at www.www.route66kartracing.com and selecting Event Results, under the Series pull-down menu.
The Bromberek family and DR Kart Racing sponsored the race weekend. The Brombereks also provided a great dinner for everyone on Saturday evening, including many side dishes, all cooked on one of Robert Bromberek’s custom made grills.
The inaugural event at Autobahn was a great success, and despite the tight parking quarters, a good time was had by all.
The next outing for the Route 66 Sprint Series will be September 9-10 at the newly expanded (and renamed) Wolf Paving Raceway, Home of the Badger Kart Club, in Dousman, WI. See you all there!
